Nearly all types of dewatering devices need the feed slurry “conditioned” to improve its filtration characteristics. This is usually achieved with the V-FOLD by dosing a small amount of polyelectrolyte into a “serpentine” mixer/flocculator mounted on the filter.

The polyelectrolytes (polymers) used in wastewater treatment are very large organic molecules that attach to tiny solid particles and bind them into chunks (technically called “flocs”). The chemistry of this process is quite complex, but in practice the correct selection of polyelectrolyte allows reliable flocculation to occur. If you are already using a polyelectrolyte in your effluent treatment plant, then usually (but not always) the same polyelectrolyte can be used with the V-FOLD. “mass flowrate” of solids in the filter feed (not the flowrate of total slurry). However, the V-FOLD’s unique design makes it tolerant of much wider variation in feed conditioning than many other filters.

Polyelectrolytes used with the V-FOLD filter are usually conventional acrylamide polymers or copolymers, which are available from a wide range of suppliers. They are easy to use and not considered to be a “Dangerous Good.” Only small amounts are used so the operating cost is usually small.

Yes, the V-FOLD can be automated in most applications. A range of models is available to meet different process automation requirements, from basic models for site electrical wiring and control, to fully automated “dewatering system control” models. The level of automation depends on the specific process and its operational needs.

The V-FOLD’s simplicity and reliability mean that, in many cases, it can operate in sync with the effluent plant—starting and stopping automatically with minimal operator intervention, requiring only occasional checks.

For applications requiring even less oversight, V-FOLD models are available with additional options for enhanced control and process alarms. The slurry feeding process is notably easy to automate, with an optional “V-FOLD automation package” that uses ultrasonic level sensing to regulate the feed rate, ensuring a consistent slurry level in the feed cavity for optimal dewatering and process monitoring.

For those seeking a more integrated solution, the “dewatering system automation control” models feature a control panel mounted on the V-FOLD frame. This panel includes a PLC and operator interface, factory-programmed for flexibility to control and display ancillary systems typically found in conventional dewatering setups. In many cases, “unattended” operation is a viable option.

The V-FOLD design is both simple and robust, with a slow belt movement that ensures reliable performance. While occasional filter belt replacement may be required, this process typically takes less than an hour, and replacement belts are cost-effective. Each V-FOLD unit is provided with a comprehensive operating and maintenance manual to facilitate ease of use and upkeep.

Commissioning and operator training typically take just one day; however, we allocate two days on-site to ensure all personnel are fully comfortable and confident in operating the filter.

Yes, V-FOLD filters are compact and can be easily mounted on a trailer. While mounting and electrical requirements may vary based on local regulations, a standard trailer is generally adequate for this application.

V-FOLD distributors offer demonstration units that can be brought to your site for short-term trials, particularly if you have an unconventional slurry. These demonstration units are full-size SS600 models mounted on trailers, complete with feed and polymer pumps. We typically carry all the necessary fittings to be fully self-sufficient, allowing the demonstration to be completed in one day with only power and water required.
